MARY READ is a cinematic journey into the life of an enigmatic historic figure—a pirate, a queer icon, a fearless woman who defied societal norms. Set against the turbulent seas of the 18th century, the film blurs the line between fact and legend.

Portrayed by non-binary clown actor Lokke Wurm, Mary’s story brings both the spirit of rebellion and the art of clowning back to the screen.

Directed by Jana Rothe, who has previously collaborated closely with Lokke Wurm on the documentary Clown*esses, this film marks their first fictional project.
